A green oasis nestled between the Gobi and Taklamakan Deserts.
The Turpan Oasis is an ancient and historic area, first settled many thousands of years ago and ever since forming a strategic stop-over on the trading routes from China to Europe and the Middle East.
Two hours drive from the major International Airport at Urumqi, Turpan has its own local airport, and is a main stop on the fast train line from Inner China.
Most visitors to the Silk Road area see the sights of Kashgar, in the West, Turpan in the East, and the capital city (Urumqi) – which has one of the best historical museums around.
Turpan tends to be a two day (two or three night) destination, and there are plenty of major tourist sites to fill this time. Although those staying longer will get a better feel for the history of the place, and perhaps explore some less well frequented historic or geographic venues.
Turpan City is a modern, clean and attractive city, not overcrowded like many Chinese cities. It still has a local traditional bazaar that can be explored.
The Vines Lodge is located in Munar Village – which is about 2kms to the east of Turpan – in easy taxi, cart, bus or walking distance. The Vines is just 500 metres away from the Emin Minaret tourist attraction.
The Vines is built in the typical Uighur style of architecture and layout. The mud brick exterior surrounds a courtyard leading to the living areas. Ceilings are high and courtyard and roof living is encouraged in the dry, warm climate. However beneath the mud brick exterior is a modern structure built to the highest standards. Locals have nicknamed The Vines, “The Palace”!
The Vines is set amongst the local village vineyards, there is always village activity outside the lodge doors, and guests are welcome to wander around the vineyards and sample the produce. A short walk down the quiet drive takes you to the village where local produce can be bargained for, or guests can soak in the atmosphere of a true local Uighur village – cows, chickens, market stalls, donkey carts and all.
Pick up/drop off arrangements can be made for Turpan Airport, Turpan Railway Station or the long distance Bus Station, and transits to/from Urumqi International Airport can be arranged for guests.
For guests travelling with car and a driver, parking is available as are guide and driver rooms.
